Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes - Peel and cut the russet potatoes into uniform 1-inch pieces. Place in a large pot, cover with cold water, and add salt.
  • Step 2: Boil the Potatoes - Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender.
  • Step 3: Prepare the Garlic - Sauté minced garlic in ½ cup of butter over low heat until fragrant and slightly golden.
  • Step 4: Drain and Mash the Potatoes - Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Let steam for a minute, then mash until smooth.
  • Step 5: Combine Everything - Mix in the sautéed garlic and melted butter, then gradually add evaporated milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  • Step 6: Assemble for Baking - Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and transfer the mashed potatoes to a greased baking dish.
  • Step 7: Create the Crunchy Topping - Combine panko breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese, then sprinkle over the mashed potatoes.
  • Step 8: Bake to Perfection - Bake for 20-25 minutes until the topping is golden brown and crispy.

Notes

For creamier mashed potatoes, consider using a potato ricer. You can also mix in fresh herbs for added flavor.
