Cuisine: Chinese

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (regular or low-sodium)
  • 3/4 cup broth (chicken, beef, or vegetable)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger (grated)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic (minced)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)

Equipment

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Small Saucepan
  • Wok or large skillet

Method

  1. Start by gathering all the ingredients listed above. Having everything ready to go will make the cooking process smoother.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, broth, brown sugar, cornstarch, sesame oil, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Whisk everything together until the sugar and cornstarch are fully dissolved.
  3. Pour the mixture into a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the sauce thickens, which should take about 3-5 minutes. If it becomes too thick, you can add a little more broth to reach your desired consistency.
  4. Taste the sauce and add salt and black pepper according to your preference. Keep in mind that the soy sauce will add some saltiness, so adjust accordingly.
  5. Once your sauce is ready, it’s time to use it! Stir-fry your choice of protein and vegetables in a hot wok or skillet. Drizzle the sauce over the stir-fry, tossing everything together until well coated. Serve immediately over rice or noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Freeze the sauce in ice cube trays for easy portioning later on.
  • Adjust the flavors with more garlic or ginger according to your preference.
