Total Time 50 minutes
Servings: 3 servings

Ingredients

  • 14 oz extra-firm tofu pressed well
  • 1 Tbsp tamari
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder or more to taste
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder or more to taste

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • tofu press or heavy weight and towels
  • Spatula or tongs

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes (or bite-sized pieces). Pat any remaining moisture off with a towel if needed.
  3. Place the tofu cubes in a medium bowl and add the tamari. Gently toss with a spatula to coat evenly.
  4. Sprinkle the cornstarch evenly over the tofu, then add the nutritional yeast, onion powder, and garlic powder. Gently toss until the cubes are evenly coated and the cornstarch is not clumped.
  5. Arrange the coated tofu cubes in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, spaced apart to allow airflow.
  6. Bake for 20 minutes, then carefully flip each cube and bake for an additional 18–20 minutes until golden and crispy.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Press tofu for several hours or overnight for best texture.
  • If you don't have a tofu press, wrap tofu in towels and weigh it down to press.
  • Adjust garlic and onion powder to taste or swap with other seasonings like smoked paprika.
  • You can tear the tofu into small pieces instead of cubing for a different texture.
  • Some tofu cubes may break during tossing; that's normal and fine.
