From Start to Finish:
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour the 9-inch round cake pans.
- Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and sugar together using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
- Step 3: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then add the vanilla extract.
- Step 4: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Step 5: With the mixer on low, alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with dry ingredients.
- Step 6: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Step 7: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
- Step 8: Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting and serve.
