Ingredients

  • 4 cups cubed baguette Stale or fresh, cut into bite-sized cubes.
  • ½ cup butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt Use less if you’re using salted butter.
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper For a touch of heat.
  • 1.5 teaspoons garlic powder Adds a savory depth to the croutons.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Spatula
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). A hot oven is essential for achieving that perfect crunch.
  2. If your baguette is fresh, let it sit out for a few hours to become slightly stale. Then, cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  3. In a small saucepan or microwave, melt the butter until it’s fully liquid. Allow it to cool slightly before using.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, toss the cubed baguette with the melted butter, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Make sure every piece is well-coated for maximum flavor.
  5. Spread the seasoned bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. This ensures even cooking and crispiness.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the croutons are golden brown and crispy. Be sure to stir them halfway through to promote even browning.
  7. Once they’re done, remove the croutons from the oven and let them cool completely. They will continue to crisp up as they cool down. Store them in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

Notes

  • Use stale bread for the best crunch.
  • Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet for even cooking.
  • Adjust seasoning to your taste before baking.
  • Watch them closely to prevent burning.
