Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings cut
  • 1 cup chicken broth or water
  • 3/4 cup hot sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar or honey
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder plus salt and black pepper (each 1/4 teaspoon)
  • salt 1/4 teaspoon
  • black pepper 1/4 teaspoon
  • cooking spray for the baking sheet

Equipment

  • Rimmed Baking Sheet
  • large skillet or deep pan
  • Tongs
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula or wooden spoon
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray or lightly brush it with oil.
  2. In a large skillet or deep pan over medium heat, combine the chicken broth (or water), hot sauce, unsalted butter, brown sugar (or honey), paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper; bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar and butter melt.
  3. Add the cut chicken wings to the simmering sauce, cover or partially cover, and simmer for 15 minutes so the wings cook through and absorb flavor.
  4. Transfer the wings in a single layer to the prepared baking sheet, reserving the pan sauce; place the wings on the upper oven rack.
  5. Bake the wings for 15 minutes, turn each wing, then bake an additional 15 minutes until the skin is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Meanwhile, simmer the reserved sauce in the skillet over medium-low heat for about 10–12 minutes until slightly thickened.
  7. Return the baked wings to the skillet and toss them in the reduced sauce until evenly coated; serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use either brown sugar or honey, not both, if you prefer.
  • Cut wings into drumettes and flats if not pre-cut.
  • Simmering the sauce concentrates flavor and helps it adhere to the wings.
  • Arrange wings in a single layer for even browning.
