Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Canola, vegetable, or coconut oil
  • 1 cup Popcorn kernels fresh
  • to taste Sea salt
  • to taste Melted butter or mix-ins optional (like garlic powder, nutritional yeast, or caramel sauce)

Equipment

  • Large heavy-bottomed pot
  • Stirring spoon
  • Measuring Cups
  • Heat-resistant lid
  • Serving Bowl

Method

  1. Gather your ingredients: 1/4 cup of your chosen oil, 1 cup of popcorn kernels, and any desired seasonings.
  2. In your large pot, pour in 1/4 cup of oil. Place the pot on medium heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop in a couple of kernels. When they pop, you’re ready for the next step!
  3. Once the oil is hot, carefully add 1 cup of popcorn kernels to the pot. Quickly cover the pot with the lid, leaving it slightly ajar to let moisture escape.
  4. Gently shake the pot back and forth over the heat. This helps prevent the kernels from burning and ensures even popping.
  5. Keep the pot over medium heat and listen closely. When the popping slows down to about 2 seconds between pops, it’s time to remove the pot from the heat.
  6. Carefully lift the lid (watch out for steam) and transfer the popcorn to a large serving bowl. Drizzle with melted butter if desired, and sprinkle with sea salt. Toss to coat evenly.
  7. Your homemade stovetop popcorn is ready to be devoured! Serve it warm and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Notes

  • Store leftover popcorn in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • For longer storage, freeze unpopped kernels in a cool, dry place.
  • Experiment with various oils and seasonings to create new flavor combinations!
