Ingredients

  • 1 box Saltine crackers 16-ounce
  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

Equipment

  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment Paper
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Whisk or spatula
  • Timer

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This is the perfect temperature to crisp up your crackers without burning them.
  2. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper. This will make for easy removal of the crackers once they’re done baking.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, melt the unsalted butter in the microwave or on the stovetop. Allow it to cool for a minute before proceeding.
  4. To the melted butter, add the brown sugar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, crushed red pepper flakes, dried oregano, salt, and freshly cracked black pepper. Whisk until everything is well combined and the sugar has dissolved.
  5. Place the Saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon the butter mixture over the crackers, ensuring each cracker gets a generous coating. You can use a spatula to spread the mixture evenly if necessary.
  6. Bake the crackers in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until they are golden brown and fragrant. Be sure to stir them halfway through the baking time for even cooking.
  7. Once baked, remove the crackers from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for about 10 minutes. They will become crispier as they cool. Serve and enjoy your Smoky Savory Fire Crackers!

Notes

  • For a more intense flavor, let the coated crackers sit for an hour before baking to allow the butter mixture to soak in.
  • If you like it extra spicy, add more crushed red pepper flakes or even a dash of cayenne pepper.
  • Don’t skip the stirring halfway through the baking process; it ensures even distribution of flavor and crispiness.
  • Experiment with different spices, like adding a bit of cumin or chili powder for a different twist.
