Ingredients

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef (93/7)
  • 1 cup onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons mustard
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 4 soft hamburger buns
  • White cheddar cheese (grated)

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Serving plates

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the lean ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat, if necessary.
  2. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Stir frequently until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the ketchup, mustard, water, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes. Pour this mixture over the beef and onions in the skillet.
  4. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully.
  5. Before serving, taste the Sloppy Joe mixture and add salt and pepper as needed. Adjust the red pepper flakes for your desired level of heat.
  6. While the mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns lightly under a broiler or in a toaster until golden brown. This step enhances the texture and prevents the buns from becoming soggy.
  7. Spoon a generous amount of the beef mixture onto each toasted bun. Top with grated white cheddar cheese for an extra layer of creamy goodness.
  8. Serve your Sweet & Spicy Sloppy Joes immediately with your favorite side dishes, like chips or a fresh salad. Enjoy the smiles around the table!

Notes

  • Ground turkey or chicken can be used in place of beef for a leaner option.
  • Use apple cider vinegar instead of Worcestershire sauce for a tangy twist.
  • Honey or maple syrup can substitute brown sugar for a different sweetness.
