Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey (93% lean for best flavor)
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs (for crunch)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (for umami flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste (for moisture and depth)
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional for kick)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder (for aroma)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt (to enhance flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper (for heat)
  • 1 large egg (to bind)
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil (for cooking)
  • Thinly sliced or grated cheese (optional)
  • Sliced avocado (for creaminess)
  • Other toppings of choice (tomatoes, lettuce, mayo or nonfat Greek yogurt)

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Non-stick skillet or grill
  • Spatula
  • Meat Thermometer

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the lean ground turkey, panko bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, hot sauce (if using), onion powder, kosher salt, ground black pepper, and the egg. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty.
  3. In a non-stick skillet, heat the canola oil over medium heat. Once hot, add the turkey patties and cook for about 5-6 minutes on one side.
  4. Carefully flip the patties and cook for another 5-6 minutes. Ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).
  5. If adding cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking and cover the skillet to help melt.
  6. Toast the whole wheat buns, assemble the burgers with your favorite toppings, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For added flavor, try mixing in fresh herbs like basil or cilantro.
  • Grill these burgers for a smoky flavor instead of frying.
  • Store leftover burgers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
